Ammonium Nitrate

Ammonium Nitrate

One of the most efficient nitrogen fertilizers in modern agriculture.

Ammonium nitrate is one of the most widely used fertilizers worldwide due to its high efficiency in supplying the soil with the nitrogen needed for plant growth. It is widely used in industrial and commercial agriculture and is characterized by its rapid absorption and easy solubility.

What is ammonium nitrate and what are its components?

Ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) is a chemical compound consisting of:

Nitrogen nitrate (NO₃⁻) – a rapidly absorbed source.

Ammonium (NH₄⁺) – a slow-absorbing source whose effect persists in the soil for a longer period.

This formula provides plant nutrition in two stages: rapid and immediate, and then continuous and long-term.

Benefits of Ammonium Nitrate in Agriculture

Stimulates rapid vegetative growth of plants.

Increases productivity in field crops and vegetables.

Highly soluble in water, making it easy to use in drip and sprinkler irrigation systems.

Highly stable in soil and suitable for most soil types.

Reduces nitrogen loss compared to some other fertilizers.

Molecular formula:

  • 5Ca(NO₃)₂.NH₄NO₃.10H₂O
  • CAS NO.:15245-12-2

The importance of calcium:

  • Calcium is a “high-quality nutrient” that can improve yield and quality and extend shelf life. Calcium needs to be supplemented throughout the growth cycle of crops to maintain sufficient levels in plant tissues and ensure healthy development of crops.
  • Calcium in plants is essential for the construction of cell walls. Insufficient calcium supply will hinder the realization of this important function, leading to abnormal growth and deformation of root tips, young leaves and bud tips. In addition, weaker cells are more vulnerable to biological attack. Calcium is also involved in enzymatic reactions and cellular interaction processes.
  • The hazards of calcium deficiency: Calcium usually manifests as partial decay of the tissue, and consequently inhibits growth. Typical symptoms include leaf deformation, leaf tip burns, and root tip burns. Calcium deficiency will also reduce the quality of the harvest and shorten the shelf life.
