Sweet grapes in the summer don’t happen by luck — they need the right balance of water, nutrients, and timing.
During the summer ripening stage, grapevines shift from growing leaves to developing sugar in the fruit. If you overfeed nitrogen at this point, you’ll get more leaves, not sweeter grapes.
What to do instead?
- Switch to a low-nitrogen, high-potassium fertilizer like 5-10-45 + TE.
- Apply potassium nitrate (KNO₃) via foliar spray early in the morning every 7–10 days.
- Use magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) to support sugar transport and reduce leaf yellowing.
Timing is everything:
- Apply your last nitrogen feeding just before flowering ends.
- From fruit set to ripening, focus on potassium, calcium, and micronutrients like boron and zinc.
Irrigation Tips:
- Avoid heavy watering late in the season—it dilutes sugar.
- Use drip irrigation with fertigation to give small, regular doses of nutrients.
Signs your grapes need help:
- Delayed ripening or uneven bunch color
- Soft grapes that burst easily = too much water
- Tough skins = potassium deficiency
With the right summer fertilizer plan, you’ll enjoy sweeter, more marketable grapes with better shelf life. It’s not just about quantity—it’s about quality and taste.
