Water Quality & Fertilizers: Hard Water Fixes

Did you know your water source could be sabotaging your fertilizer program?

Hard water—rich in calcium and magnesium—can raise the pH of your irrigation water and lock up essential nutrients like phosphorus, iron, and zinc. When pH rises above 7.5, plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers struggle to absorb micronutrients, even when you apply the correct fertilizer.

Symptoms of nutrient lockout due to hard water:

  • Yellowing between leaf veins (iron deficiency)
  • Slow growth despite regular fertilizing
  • Poor fruit setting and blossom-end rot

What can you do?

  1. Test your water pH and hardness using a simple test kit or send a sample to a local lab.
  2. If water pH is too high (above 7.5), acidify it with phosphoric acid, citric acid, or nitric acid (use with care).
  3. Switch to fertilizers that are chelated (e.g., EDTA, EDDHA forms of Fe, Zn, Mn).
  4. Use blended fertilizers with built-in pH buffering if water tests are unavailable.

For high-calcium waters, avoid frequent calcium nitrate usage unless your crop specifically requires it. You can also install a simple filter system or use rainwater for sensitive crops.

Proper water management boosts nutrient availability and increases fertilizer efficiency by 20–40%, saving you money and improving yield

Danatek offers a wide range of specialized fertilizers that help improve soil and crops, most notably:
